I'm trying to draw a P&ID of my workplace's process, in accordance with ISO standards. In my search for the relevant standards, I have found a few that seem relevant to this. I am not sure exactly which of them are essential for P&ID drawing, and what the real difference between these are. Naturally, I want to save as much money as possible, so I'd like to know exactly what I'll be buying access to.

ISO 15519-2:2015(en) seems to be a listing of general rules. If they're too general, I'll have no use for it, as I'll likely have learned it already, or have fairly easy access to it for free through colleagues and former teachers.

ISO 10209:2022(en) seems to be a more detailed listing of rules, and also seems to be limited to the chemical and petrochemical industry, which is perfect for me, as that's the industry I work in.

ISO 14617 (all parts) seems to be a gallery of symbols, though I am not sure, as I couldn't access a preview (hence no link). It is listed as an indispensible standard in the preview of ISO 10682-2:2012(en) though.

ISO 10209:2022(en) seems to be a dictionary for terms related to P&IDs, among other things. I don't think I need this for the drawing of P&IDs themselves, but rather the discussion of them. EDIT: I might need this actually, given that the gallery of symbols may label the symbols with terms that are too obscure to effectively google. If the dictionary gives some basic descriptions, then I think I'll manage, if not, then I'll need this one too.

ISO 81714 (all parts) seems to be a gallery of symbols for the labelling of products, which again, doesn't seem essential for the drawing P&IDs.

EDIT: I found this legend of ISO symbols, but I don't believe it is complete (and perhaps not up-to-date). It seems too short to be complete, and it doesn't completely align with what I've been taught at school, making my wonder if it is up-to-date (though I am completely open to the possibility that I've been mistaught).

So, my question is this: what is the function of these standards and which one of them are essential to the drawing of P&IDs?

  • Since no standard is going to perfectly match up with your needs, you pick the closest to your application and augment with others as needed. – StainlessSteelRat Jun 19 '22 at 02:17
