    Do you have the right COM port selected? Is your Nano a cheap chinese clone that may not even have the bootloader installed (I have had that before...)? Has it ever worked, or is this your first attempt with this board? – Majenko Sep 10 '20 at 12:13

For me selecting the ATmega328P (Old Bootloader) from the Tools --> Processor menu in the Arduino IDE solved the problem.

I had the same problem with an Arduino Micro. When the upload starts, press once the reset button.
