Hydrology is the study of the properties and behaviour of water. It concerns both surface as well as subsurface water, although water in the oceans and atmosphere is generally excluded. Those are studied by and , respectively.

Typical subjects of hydrological studies are the hydrological cycle and water balance, the chemistry of the water, and flow patterns in surfacewater or groundwater.

The applications of hydrology are diverse, ranging from management of water resources, to prediction and prevention of floodings, droughts or landslides. Also the designs of sewer networks, bridges, canals, and hydro-electrical dams are heavily influenced by hydrological knownledge. Furthermore, hydrological concepts are sometimes also used outside the direct field of Earth Science, for example in modelling of urine flows in diapers.
