The OSM community has not settled on the meaning of unisex=*. The meaning of unisex=yes is unclear, with two incompatible tagging schemes in use:
- unisex=yes always means a gender-neutral facility. Gender segregated facilities (e.g. toilets) should be tagged female=yes + male=yes. Combination male=yes + female=yes cannot be replaced with unisex=yes.
- unisex=yes is a shorthand for male=yes + female=yes, and can be used for a unisex, gender neutral facilities, or one with separated female & male sections. Usage of the unisex=yes tag for gender segregated features contradicts with the general meaning of the term "unisex". Use female=yes & male=yes in this cases.
Usage
Use this tag in combination with other tags, most frequently in combination with amenity=toilets.
Alternating
In some countries, some facilities are open to both genders, but not at the same time. Genders are alternating (some days open only to men, some days only for women). This occurs in Islamic countries (e.g. in Iran) for swimming pools in hotels (even the hotel personal serving the pool is alternating their gender). It is not always evident to tag restriction dates for either sex, this can change at any time, depending on reservations. The same restriction applies to males and females. See also Bathing.
This tag may be further refined to remove the gender restriction for very young children (so that a parent can accompany their children, which cannot come alone; the gender restriction still applies to that parent or authorized accompanying adult).
Implications
In case of conflict with other gender-based tags (e.g. female=*), resolve in favour of the more specific tag.
